Terms

The agreement, in plain sentences

These are the terms between you and Siphesihle Mbili, who runs Inkece as a sole trader in South Africa. They are written to be read rather than to be survived, and where a clause would ordinarily be vague — what happens to your data when you stop paying, for instance — it is specific instead.

Using Inkece means you accept them.

What Inkece is, and what it is not

Inkece is a tool for recording and understanding your own money, on your own and with one other person. It reads bank statement files that you upload, keeps your records, and works out totals, splits and reports from them.

It is not any of the following, and never claims to be:

  • Financial advice. Inkece describes your own numbers and stops there. It will not recommend a product, a fund or a move. That is regulated advice in South Africa under FAIS and requires a licensed financial services provider, which we are not.
  • Tax advice or a tax return. The tax pack groups your records the way a return asks about them. It is a summary to hand to whoever does your tax, not a submission and not a substitute for one.
  • A bank or a payment service. No money moves through Inkece. It never connects to your bank account and cannot make, receive or hold a payment.
  • A record of authority. What the app says about who owes whom is arithmetic on what the two of you entered and agreed. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a legally binding account between you.

Your account

You need to be 18 or older and to give a real email address — it is how a password is reset and how we tell you about anything that affects your money, so an address you cannot read is a way to lose access to your own records.

Keep your password to yourself. We will never ask you for it, for a one-time code, or for your card number, and anybody who does is not us. Turning on two-factor authentication is free and takes a minute, and we would rather you did.

You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think somebody else has reached it, sign out everywhere from your settings and tell us at admin@inkece.co.za.

Households, and the other person

A household holds at most two people. Inviting somebody means they get their own private space, a shared space with you, and the ability to see and edit shared records — which is the point, and is not reversible by pretending it did not happen. Invite the person you actually share money with.

Neither of you can see the other’s private records, and neither can we. Both of you can export everything you can see.

Either of you can leave. The shared records stay with the household so the remaining person’s settled months are not rewritten; your private records go with you. The owner of a household that still has a partner in it cannot leave until the other person has — somebody has to stay accountable for the shared history.

Plans, the trial, and paying

Free is a complete money tracker for one person, with no card and no expiry. Pro is a household of two at R129 a month or R1,290 a year, VAT included. One price covers the household — your partner is included and is never charged separately.

Every new household starts with 30 days of Pro, with no card. It is long enough to close a full month, so you see the monthly report and the Money Check-In before deciding. Nothing charges you when it ends; the household simply moves to Free.

Subscriptions are taken by Paystack and renew until you cancel. Cancel from your settings at any time and Pro runs to the end of the period you have paid for. If a card fails, Pro keeps working for two weeks while the retries run, and we email you about it rather than switching things off the same afternoon.

If a price changes, existing subscribers are told by email before it applies to them.

What happens when a trial or subscription ends

Nothing you entered is deleted, and nobody is locked out. Both people keep their sign-in, stay in the household, and keep working with your shared accounts and transactions — adding, editing and categorising them exactly as before. Both of you can still export everything, in full, as JSON.

These stop working until somebody subscribes:

  • The Ours budget, and changes to how you split shared costs
  • Settlement — who owes whom, and matching a payment between the two of you
  • The Money Check-In
  • Assets, and receipts attached to transactions
  • The Ask box
  • Report PDFs, months before the current one, and the tax-year pack
  • Forecasting beyond three months, and more than three statement imports a month

Inviting a new partner needs Pro. A partner already in the household stays in it — a plan ending is not a reason to put somebody out of their own records.

Everything comes back exactly as it was the moment a subscription starts. Nothing is recalculated or lost in between.

Statement imports, and getting the numbers right

You upload the file, or email it to the address we give you; we read it and put it in your ledger. Rows are fingerprinted so that re-uploading an overlapping export does not double your month, and anything we could not place under a heading is left for you to sort.

Banks change their exports without telling anybody, and a parser can misread a row. The figures in Inkece are only as good as what went in, so treat your bank statement as the authority and Inkece as the thing that helps you understand it. If an import looks wrong, tell us at admin@inkece.co.za — that is a bug on our side, not a mistake on yours.

Fair use

Do not use Inkece to:

  • Hold or record somebody else's financial information without them knowing
  • Get at another household's records, or test whether you can
  • Automate access at a volume no person would generate
  • Break South African law, or anything unlawful in the country you are in

We can suspend an account that is doing any of this. Where it is not an emergency we will say what the problem is and give you a chance to put it right first, and you can export your records either way.

Availability, and what we do not promise

Inkece is a young product, and it is run by one person rather than a company with a night shift. The database is backed up every night and the restore is rehearsed — but there is no uptime guarantee here, and we would rather say so than print a number we cannot stand behind.

Keep your own copy of anything you would hate to lose. The export exists for exactly that, it is free, and it takes one click.

Where the law allows us to limit our liability, we limit it to what you have paid us in the twelve months before whatever went wrong. Nothing in these terms limits anything that cannot be limited by law — including under the Consumer Protection Act — and nothing here affects your rights under POPIA.

Your records stay yours

Everything you enter or import belongs to you. We claim no ownership of it and no right to use it for anything but running the service for you. We do not sell it, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not use your financial records to train models.

What we do with it, in detail, is on the privacy page.

Ending it

You can close your account whenever you like, from your settings. Export first — once it is gone we cannot get it back for you.

We can end an account for a serious or repeated breach of these terms. If we ever shut Inkece down, we will give at least 30 days’ notice by email and keep the export working for the whole of it.

Which law, and changes to these terms

These terms are governed by South African law, and the South African courts have jurisdiction.

When we change something material here, we will email you before it takes effect rather than only changing the date at the top. If you do not accept a change, you can export your records and close your account.

Anything unclear, ask us at admin@inkece.co.za before you agree to it.
